There are three main muscles located in the lumbar spine that contribute to back pain: the quadratus lumborum muscle, the iliacus muscle, and the psoas muscle. All of these muscles attach to the lumbar vertebrae and disc, and hook to the femur at the top of the leg, where they function as hip flexors.
