The cervical spine within the neck plays an important role in the body. Not only does the cervical spine allow the head to move freely, but it also protects a large portion of the spinal cord.
This video shows some of the basic components in the cervical spine as they move. The vertebrae (bones) are separated by spongy discs that have a viscous center surrounded by sturdy walls. These sit just in front of the spinal cord, which has nerve roots that extend outward in between all the vertebrae.
